The “Living Machine”.. Week (9)

Inspired by the original Gasometer I am intending to transform into a dynamic Cultural Center, I am imaging this building as a “Living Machine” that aims to bring its users together, to help them feel better about themselves and about the society around them.

Section1
Abod, W. (2017). A section with zoning scheme. Ink and coloring pencils. Art and Design module, Practice 1. MA project studies.

The Idea was generated from a metaphor of a machine, that has a living core made of large trees and a water area/ fountain located at the basement, this core is surrounded by “floating” slabs that resemble the wheels of a machine (specifically from the industrial era) that overlap and complement each other, hosting different functions and zones, while being integrated with nature through greenery and daylight from the roof that I decided to turn into a skylight.

The functions of the building are categorized into 5 categories including:

  • Those focusing on the well-being of the visitor (the spa in the basement floor),
  • Those that follow a one-way pattern of spreading information (like art galleries,..),
  • Those that follow a two-way pattern of spreading information (Workshops, meeting rooms,..)
  • Restaurants and Cafés,
  • Shops
